Marianne

Conceptual postulate

To you

To your beneficial waves! To your valorous vibrations! To the ideal of your unified field! To your liberating interactions! To your inspiring fractals! To your sfumato-like resonances! To your polarities of consciousness! To your gravitational energies! To your sovereign magnetism! To your forces of attraction! To your symbolic entanglements! To your confluence of times! To your benevolent intentional power! To your self-fulfilling predictions! To your “charm coefficient”! To your lyrical flights! To your dreamlike and poetic presence! To your centrifugally fertile nudity facing History! To your delicate little tricolor flower, taking root and giving birth within your being…

The Republic has invented and perpetuated an Art: the Art of Living in an open, harmonious, and equitable society. At once a free Woman, a valiant and attentive icon, Marianne is, for each of us and for Our Republic, the inspiring Muse of this art of living in the French way.

This work depicts and renders an eternal Marianne: naked, multifaceted, radiant, and fascinating, free both in herself and from the gaze of others. A proud Marianne, for she carries within her sacred flanks the great continuum of History which, like a philtre of republican love, infuses itself into the celestial blue of our secular patriotism. At the enchanting chalice of this alchemical elixir, which carries life and the “Grail” of the values we have made our own, We, “Her Loving People,” quench our thirst for Liberty, Equality, and Fraternity.

Because she gave birth to us or adopted us, because she protects us, cares for us, and more than anything, nurtures us to nourish our hearts, even if we didn't have a single drop of French blood, Marianne should forever murmur in our veins.

May this paraphrase of the enlightened words of Romain Gary always be shared with such fervor by every French citizen.

Pascal di Péri

A work with multiple components:

A NATIONAL PROJECT: An installation with a local, community-based foundation:

Because it is both good and necessary to reflect on the impact of our symbols, Pascal di Péri will propose that each department, through its cities—links in the great national chain—be entrusted with a certain number of “MARIANNE” sculptures. The inauguration of this national installation on the upcoming 14th of July would serve as the crowning moment of this collective citizen artwork, the most significant in France…

NOTE:
This exhibition is not intended to replace the plaster busts that already adorn town halls. By its very nature, it is more temporary, but the elected officials will decide…

The organization of a national event: inauguration/opening ceremony

This exhibition/installation could only be inaugurated on July 14th…
A highly symbolic date to stage, through an opening/vernissage, this communal, departmental, and national event…

2

The publication of a unique art book.
In partnership with a prestigious institution: The National Printing Office

A remarkable-sized box (also following the Golden Ratio: 60 × 37 cm) that will include the original plates and an art book compiling, in a detailed catalog, all the municipalities that participated in this event…

The following text provides a detailed explanation of the conceptual references of the work.

A “Manifesto-Work”

It is dedicated to Lucien Auguste Camus (Albert Camus's father) to whom we owe the following:

"A man has to restrain himself..."

Even though this very brief phrase was originally spoken in a different context, it carries and structures the entire framework as well as the essence of the “creative journey” of this research. On its own, it encapsulates the very core that nourishes the theme of “Marianne,” affirming the most significant aspect of the relational model between man and woman in the Western world. With profound wisdom and a forward-thinking egalitarian accuracy, it clearly establishes the foundational legitimacy and the culmination of a grand civilizational ideal.

This simple yet crucial sentence, is the essence of what summarizes our "European Western identity".

It radiates like a “Motto” written in invisible ink between the lines of our history. By implying, “a civilized man must, above all, restrain himself…,” it has sealed, between our behavioral unconscious and our social daily life, a “pact of equality and non-transgression of the Feminine space.”

It asserts with determination that male hegemony, latent misogyny, and the compulsive carnal desire of men must be contained and controlled, under any circumstance and regardless of any mode of dress. At the same time, it emphasizes that women bear no guilt for any seductive or provocative behavior… This, however, should not constrain men into a timid or overly cautious stance that could be stifling. A subtle balance must be maintained, in harmony with the natural flow of social life.

Indeed, in order to win a woman’s favor, before resorting to clumsy, awkward, or overly insistent masculine ardor, a man should learn to act with kindness, dignity, gentleness, subtlety, and, if possible, with refinement.

A woman’s consent is the only prerequisite here. She is not “sexual fodder,” as she has too often been treated in the past. Without this chivalric approach, which so clearly illustrates Western notions of manhood, he not only tarnishes the heart of his culture but also falls into a “pithecanthropic” behavior. In today’s terms, one might say: “A man must restrain himself from acting like a brute.”

The Westernized man of today cannot act otherwise than by embracing the understanding of mutual, consensual love—whether sensual or sexual—if he does not wish to perpetuate behaviors that relegate women to the status of the “subjugated.”

For Western men, deference should be the guiding principle in the context of seduction games.

As long as this “romantic,” chivalric spirit—whose gallantry, often deemed outdated, is but an outgrowth—prevails, we will continue to uphold and perpetuate the values of this implicit civilizational compass.

In this mode of life, which has established itself in the West, all relational choices and peri-sexual decisions are the sole prerogative of the woman.

The saying, “Man proposes, woman disposes,” perfectly illustrates this principle. Unreserved adherence to this structural line is fundamental for the entire male community, as it establishes the true existential prerequisite and the societal backbone that governs our Western way of life.

Machismo and abuses of power exerted by men over women—“who owe them submission” since the dawn of time—amount to a form of ancestral gendered racism, which, ultimately, is only a substitute for primitive slavery. The emancipation of women finds, in Lucien Auguste Camus’ words, and paradoxically as well in artistic nudes, powerful factors that support their liberation.

May these four words help to illuminate the future of a Western world that is lacking in direction...

A SYNTHETIC AND CONCEPTUAL PRESENTATION OF THE WORK

This creation brings together several layers:

  • The symbolism embodied by Marianne, and more broadly, the republican symbols and their social, cultural, philosophical, and other consequences…

  • A phrase whose subliminal awareness enlightens us…

  • The “Artistic Nude” and its influence on little-known undercurrents…

  • Quantum Art and its perspectives on fascinating unknowns…

Indeed, Marianne, the archetypal muse of Our Republican Mythology, and the conceptualization established here, give rise to reflections whose premises—some unconventional, others central—extend far beyond the realm of art.

The perception and new approach surrounding this symbol open a path to understanding our “societal foundation,” expanding and refining our interpretation of it.

At these conceptual crossroads, factual observations and critical reassessments emerge:

MARIANNE :

Emblematic figurehead of our Republic. Could she be the most vivid and precious symbol of France? Why? What does she reveal to us? What does this embodied icon convey? … Is she THE woman? Is she a Goddess? … How should one approach a subject that belongs to everyone? How can it be made to resonate with each individual?

OUR SYMBOLS:

On the importance of reclaiming our symbols and myths: they are both metaphorical references and vehicles for the essential values that contribute to our sense of “Building Community.” These “beacons” have been bequeathed to us by history; they protect us from storms… Making these “compasses” inspiring, preeminent, and vibrant reinforces the profound essence of what truly constitutes us and what shapes our civilizational future. Art is an excellent medium through which to engage with this universe…

« A MAN HAS TO RESTRAIN HIMSELF...»

It is an indisputable fact that, since Antiquity, the persistence of this motif in art—the Nude—has constituted one of the central elements of pre-Western and then Western culture. The Nude is, in itself, even a form of art, and not merely a “subject”… The procedure of “nudification” employed by artists seems to cloak the body in a second skin: the spirit of the sensible… The dossier elaborates on this particularity…

ARTISTIC NUDITY:

"This is not a naked woman..." René Magritte could have said.

An emblematic flagship of our Republic. Could it be the most vibrant and precious symbol of France? Why? What does it reveal to us? What does this embodied icon convey?… Is it THE woman? Is it a Goddess?… How should one approach a subject that belongs to everyone? How can it be made to speak to each and every one of us?
